Family, this is your favorite Queer radio personality Anna DeShawn here with our Queer news from today.
The family of Irene Chavez has started a GoFundMe. Trans wrestler Nyla Rose stood up for herself during a match and gave a transphobic fan the bird. Consider giving to the National Center for Lesbian Rights this holiday season. It’s Kwanzaa and today’s principle is Ujamaa.
So family, as you know I’ve been reporting on Irene Chavez and tragic death. Her family is seeking answers and I saw this morning that they started a GoFundMe to help mitigate some costs. If you have some money to give, no amount is too small. Visit GoFundMe and search Irene Chavez and you’ll find it. Irene Chavez, we speak your name.
Our next story for today is about Nyla Rose. I haven’t been into wrestling for a long time but Nyla is a trans wrestler doing her thing in the AEW also known as All Elite Wrestling. In 2019, she became the first trans wrestler to win a major American title so she’s pretty much a legend in this world. Well last week while wrestling in Greensboro, North Carolina a transphobic fan brought a sign that read, “Nyla Rose is this guy’s dad.” The sign had an arrow pointing toward the person next to them. Without hesitation Nyla gave that fan the middle finger and the security followed suit and promptly removed the fan from the event. I’m here for all of it and Nyla’s wife caught the moment too and shared, “My wife is the strongest person I know.”

Ya’ll know as part of our holiday stories I’ve been sharing some organizations you can think about giving too during this holiday season. Next up is the National Center for Lesbian Rights. NCLR is a national legal organization committed to advancing the civil and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, legislation, policy, and public education. They are a non-profit, public interest law firm that litigates precedent-setting cases at the trial and appellate court levels; advocates for equitable public policies affecting the LGBTQ community; provides free legal assistance to LGBTQ people and their legal advocates; and conducts community education on LGBTQ issues. I’m a big fan of their Born Perfect campaign to end the practice of conversion therapy across the country. You can learn more about them at https://www.nclrights.org or follow them on Instagram.
Family, Habari Gani! Ujamaa, cooperative economics. The focus is on building and maintaining our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together. Similar to Ujima, this principle refers to uplifting your community economically. It’s Kwanzaa and I’d love for this to be a way for us to interact with each other this week as we welcome in the new year. In the description below there is a link to talk with me via a platform called SpeakPipe. Leave me a voice message and tell me what the Kwanzaa principle for the day means to you. I’d love to share them as part of the podcast. If leaving a voice message is too much, drop a comment. I can share those too. Harambee!
Now my word of the day says “Whether you think you can or think you can’t. You are right.” Your thoughts will impact every action you make as you move throughout the world. The mind is incredibly powerful so you must feed it positive affirmations and encouragement. You have to believe in yourself more than anyone else. Whatever you’re thinking will manifest itself into the world, so affirm the positive so only good can come your way. Are you preparing for 2022? C’mon . Till tomorrow family, peace.
