About this Episode

Family, this is your favorite Queer radio personality Anna DeShawn here with our Queer news from today.

Ke’Yahonna Stone, a Black trans woman, was killed trying to break up a fight. Amy Schnieder becomes the highest earning woman in Jeopardy! history, Consider giving to the National Black Justice Coalition this holiday season. It’s Kwanzaa and today’s principle is Nia.

Today’s leading story is coming out of Indiana. Ke’Yahonna Stone, a 32-year old Black trans woman, was shot while trying to break up a fight outside of an Indiana nightclub. Ke’Yahonna was a community advocate who was just hired to work at the Trans Solutions Research & Resource Center. This organization provides health and social services to trans and gender-nonconforming people. Hear what the founder of Trans Solutions Marrisa Miller had to say, “Ke’Yahonna was loved by the community and the community is hurting. So many of the community members were standing right there. You know it wasn’t that they got the call. They were the call.”  The community knew her for opening her own home to trans youth who needed a space to feel safe. On the day she was just shot she had just left spending time with her family over the holidays. This has been a sad week for the community family. Hold your family close. Hold your friends close. Because the world is a whole lot right now.

Next up is another story about Amy Schneider. The reigning Jeopardy! Champion. Ya’ll remember we talked about her a couple of weeks ago because she had won 14 straight games and clocked in over $570,000 at that point. That win also qualified her to be the first trans woman to compete in the Tournament of Champions. Well now, she has become the highest earning woman of all time with her 18th consecutive win! Her total winnings are now $706,800. Amy said, “It was inspirational for me to see transgender contestants on the show before I became a contestant and I hope that I am now doing that same thing for all the other trans Jeopardy! fans out there.” Amy often rocks her transgender flag pin and is standing proud for all of us. If you haven’t been watching you’ve got a great Queer reason to start.

Ya’ll know as part of our holiday stories I’ve been sharing  some organizations you can think about giving too during this holiday season. Next up is the National Black Justice Coalition. Founded in 2003, NBJC  has been America’s leading national civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+, and same gender loving (LGBTQ+/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS through coalition building, federal policy change, research, and education. Our mission is to end racism, homophobia, and LGBTQ+/SGL bias and stigma. NBJC supports Black individuals, families, and communities in strengthening the bonds and bridging the gaps between the movements for racial justice and LGBTQ+/SGL equity. I remember going to DC for summits hosted by NBJC and they were always a time of learning and community building. To learn more about them visit their website nbjc.org or follow them on Twitter & Instagram.

Habari Gani! Nia, purpose. The focus is on making our collective vocation the building and developing of our community, in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. It’s Kwanzaa and I’d love for this to be a way for us to interact with each other this week as we welcome in the new year. In the description below there is a link to talk with me via a platform called SpeakPipe. Leave me a voice message and tell me what the Kwanzaa principle for the day means to you. I’d love to share them as part of the podcast. If leaving a voice message is too much, drop a comment. I can share those too. Harambee!

Let’s wrap up Queer News today with my word of the day. Ya’ll know Anna’s always got a word. Today’s word is “Don’t wish for it work for it.” This quote sits behind me in my office and in my home gym. I see it every single day. We stay wishing for things but when are you going to work for it. Nothing comes to you just because you think you deserve it. That’s not how it happens. You have to go out and get it. You have to put in the time, the energy, the love. Family, don’t keep wishing for it, work for it. Till tomorrow, peace.
