This Week’s Top Story

Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill SB 244 Dismissed By Kansas Governor Laura Kelly

We have good news regarding Kansas bills SB 244 and HB2426. The bills in question would’ve allowed private citizens to act as bounty hunters, encouraging them to search for trans people utilizing private business restrooms and sue them for as much money as possible. It was announced recently that Governor Kelly vetoed the Senate Bill 244. Now that Senate Bill 244 has been vetoed, the bill will return to the Senate. A potential override of the veto could still happen if there’s enough votes in the republican-legislature and Kansas Republicans Ty Masterson and House Speaker Dan Hawkins have vowed to veto. The Senate needs 2/3rd’s majority for the bill to become a law. While we wait to see what comes next for this bill, Kansans please continue to call your legislators.

This Week In Politics

Virginia Rep Abigail Spanberger Defends Marriage Equality and Abortion Rights In Constitution Amendments

Virginia Representative Abigail Spanberger asks the local government and people of Virginia to take a stand. Earlier this month she wrote into legislation positive constitutional amendments for marriage equality. The amendment is to the 2006 Marshall-Newman Amendment which defined marriage as “between one man and one woman and barred recognition of any legal status ‘approximating’ marriage.” The Marshall-Newman amendment was ruled unenforceable back in 2014, but Rep. Spanberger aims to eradicate it from the Virginia Constitution entirely. Revising the state constitution will also protect marriage equality in the state of Virginia should the supreme court ever revert that decision to the states.

Shevrin Jones Is Florida Democrats New Leader Elect

Continuing the good vibes in political news this week, Shevrin Jones was unanimously voted by the Florida Democrats to be the next Leader Elect starting 2028. Senator Jones has been a part of the Florida Senate since 2020 making history as the first gay person to be elected into the Senate. In a brief, but heart-felt statement on instagram he thanked his colleagues for their support: “Truly grateful for the trust my colleagues have placed in me to lead our Senate Democrats. This isn’t about me. It’s about US.

Women’s Sports Sundays is ESPN’S newest weekly prime-time programming announced on Thursday. Set to air this summer, this new programming block aims to highlight women’s sports every Sunday night. This is an exciting time for professional women’s sports, and hopefully the prime-time spot will garner more interest and support for women’s sports. As of now the WNBA and the NWSL are the two leagues that will be featured, but ESPN did say there will be more details to come regarding the matchups and talent that will appear on the program. Family, what sports and talent would you like to see highlighted on Women’s Sports Sundays?

They will also be offering a virtual option May 2nd-May 4th for festival attendees to stream films from home. Anna’s Word

This week Anna’s word is trust the process. Sometimes we don’t know why things happen but we can’t always ask why. We have to trust the process and the path we’re on. I lean on the scripture that says, “all things work together for good to those who love God”. Amen.
