Special Edition: Anna provides Roe v. Wade reflection and provides a state by state overview in a post-Roe era

I will never understand why people think it’s okay to put laws in place that control other people’s lives. If you don’t agree with abortion don’t get one. If you don’t believe in gay marriage. Don’t have one. If you don’t believe in contraceptives don’t use protection. But your beliefs which are often rooted in toxic Christianity are yours and yours alone. Don’t impose that on others especially when it’s not causing you as an individual any harm.

Family. It’s your favorite queer radio personality Anna Deshawn with a special edition this Sunday because the Supreme Court has done it. They’ve overturned Roe v. Wade and nearly 50 years of precedent. Anyone else absolutely just infuriated today. Well I wanted to take some time to share my thoughts and breakdown where these states have landed post Roe v. Wade. Let’s go.

Happy Pride Sunday and today we will not forget BG. It’s been 129 days that Brittney Griner has been wrongfully detained in Russia. Bring BG Home.

Family, they really did it. They really overturned nearly 50 years of legal precedent. You know it’s funny. We knew it was coming, rite. We knew this decision was coming down any day and yet I still felt gutted. I felt unprotected. I felt vulnerable. And I still do. I’m so angry that there is a law preventing women and those who have the ability to give birth from making decisions about their own bodies. Giving birth is one of the most dangerous things a person will do in their lifetime. Someone please go look at the latest maternal mortality rates here in the United States. Why are we forcing child birth on someone? Regulate a man’s sexual behavior? I’m just so over it.

These folks are pro-birth not pro-life. Period. Pro-Life should come along with solutions for the number women and especially Black women that die giving birth. Pro-Life should include federally mandated parental leave. Pro-Life should include universal health care that guarantees care to sustain life for the birthing parent and the child. But no they’d rather force a person to have a baby they don’t want and then recommend adoption. A system where so many children are not currently being served.

So when Roe v. Wade was officially overturned 13 states had statues in place to overturn abortion rights immediately or almost immediately. Like in the blink of an eye. Here they go, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Now all of these states aren’t created totally equal but there are bans nonetheless. Let’s break it down. Wyoming, Utah, Mississippi, and Idaho, will allow abortions in cases of rape but we all know how tough and sometimes impossible it is to prove a woman has been raped in court. That’s why women choose not to report it. Not only do they not want to relive it over and over, the possibility of the man being found guilty is so low especially if you don’t have the money to fight. All of these states will allow a woman to have an abortion if it means it will save her life. I mean all but South Dakota. Remind me to just skip that state all together. Then for Oklahoma, Kentucky, Idaho & Arkansas they will give you prison time and a fine if you’re found guilty of getting or performing an abortion. It’s said that a dozen more states will join these over the coming months.

There are five states that had pre-Roe abortion bans that are still technically state law just while Roe was law of the land those laws coudn’t be enforced. Some of those states are included in the list above and then there is Alabama, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona & West Virginia. These states are still figuring things out and it will be based on if Democrats or Republicans are in political control. This is why giving states the power is a mess. A total mess.

Now which states are protecting the rights of women. Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,  Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, & Washington. Thank you. I’m so grateful to live in Illinois where the mayor and governor are doubling down on protecting a pregnant person’s right to have autonomy over their own bodies.

If you’re counting I haven’t named all 50 states because some states don’t have anything on the books either way.

What a mess.

Now family, on this Pride Sunday and I’m not feeling up for the celebration. But I will say this, go and have a wonderful time today. Go out there and party for those who can’t party for themselves. As Beyonce said, “You won’t break my soul, You won’t break my soul, I’m telling everybody, everybody”. Till tomorrow family, peace.
