Our leading story today is a political one as the Democrats attempted to pass voting rights legislation yesterday ahead of midterm elections. They are doing this to counter the numerous laws passed in Republican led states that are instituting new voting restrictions state by state. For example, in Georgia if you show up at the wrong polling place they won’t allow you to cast provisional ballots. They will in fact turn you away and tell you to try again. They are also limiting the number of drop boxes available which were really popular in 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID.  In the popular Fulton County, the number of drop boxes available to voters went from 38 in 2020 to eight in municipal elections last year. In Florida, a new law makes it harder for voters to continue receiving ballots by mail and limits the availability of drop boxes. Now the primary goal for Democrats is to make it easier for everyone regardless of which state you live in to vote. The Democrats were looking to make Election Day a federal holiday, set minimum national standards for voting by mail and restore requirements that states seek federal approval for changes to their electoral practices that could harm minority voters. Well they couldn’t get it to pass in the Senate because of two democrats & the filibuster rules; The senators Manchin & Sinema are moderate Democrats who don’t want the filibuster rules to change and so they decided not to vote for the voters rights bill. A bill that would help to strengthen back the Voters Rights Act of 1965. In my mind, this is a mess and what continues to plague the Democratic party. Republicans will stand together in the midst of mess & ugliness but Democrats can’t get two moderates to stand with them for voting rights! My word. These midterm elections are going to be very interesting. Get your people registered to vote and lets make sure we show up and show out in the face of these discriminatory laws and a fractured Democratic party.

Now in other news Mexico isn’t playing around with their soccer or rather futball fans. For years, their fans have done a chant which roughly translates to “gay prostitute”. Well FIFA isn’t happy about it and neither is the Mexican federation. FIFA’s disciplinary committee issued a punishment to Mexico in November which ordered them to play it’s next two home World Cup qualifiers without any fans. They also fined the Mexican federation $110,000 for the homophobic chant. Now the Mexican Federation is saying that any fan caught using the anti-gay chant at a match with get hit with a 5-year ban. We know how much the people love their futball so a 5 year ban is much worse than any monetary fine that’s for sure. Good job FIFA and Mexico for standing up for LGBTQ folks.

Our last story for today is about the NAACP & GLAAD Award nominations that dropped yesterday. Both of them took their announcements online and some of my favs have made the list. For the NAACP Image Awards the youtuber Terrell, I love his show, who’s had some of my all time fav artists on was nominated for outstanding social media personality. I was shocked to see Lil Nas X on the list for both entertainer of the year and outstanding male artist. When was the last time a black gay man was in that category. Has that ever happened? I digress. Come through Black gay men. Pose is nominated for outstanding drama series, outstanding writing in a drama series, & Billy Porter is nominated for outstanding actor in a drama series. Then Harlem is up for outstanding comedy series and Cierra Glaude is up for outstanding breakthrough creative for directing Queer Sugar. So family is definitely represented in various categories for the NAACP Image Awards.

For the GLAAD award nominations our Black & Brown representation is shining through too. Twenties is up for outstanding comedy series. Master of None presents Moments in Love is up for outstanding limited series or anthony series. If you have not seen Moments in Love just do yourself a favor and dig into it. It’s so real. So raw. So honest. So well shot. Give it a chance because it’s totally worth it. Our musical artists Lil Nas X, Joy Oladokun, Vincint, Asiahn, Arlo Parks are all nominated. For television series, Pose, Harlem, & With Love have been nominated. Ya’ll know Pose but If you haven’t seen Harlem or With Love both will make you laugh and cry at the same time. Both are really well done. Then there is a special recognition category; All Boys Aren’t Blue, Alok, The Laverne Cox Show, & Life Out Loud with LZ Granderson are up for awards as well. I love all of this good news and I love seeing Black, Brown, & Queer creatives getting their shine.

Now it’s time for our word of the day. Today’s word says, “A little progress each day adds up to big results.” I love this quote because it reminds me that all we need to do is make one good decision at a time. One small step forward each day. All we need is that little bitty mustard seed of faith. We all manage and hold a lot each day and it gets challenging. Remember you don’t have to save the world in one day. You are a superhero every single day. Never forget that. Till tomorrow family, peace.
