About Queer News
Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn here with our queer news from today.
An app called Giggle is a women only app but trans women are not allowed. Amy Schneider has won her 39th straight Jeopardy! win & passed Matt Amodio for the number two spot & Jasmin Savoy Brown stars as the first queer character in the Scream franchise history.
Our leading story for today is about an app called Giggle. The app dropped in early 2020 for women to connect about the latest issues, politics, gossip, news and more. The app encourages you to promote your business and or yourself, find accomodation and roommates, connect privately to discuss your most intimate thoughts – all with mutual consent. Well it’s come out now that the AI, artificial intelligence, being used to authorize access to the all women app is built on the pretense of white Eurocentric beauty standards. Here’s how it works. You download the app, upload a picture of yourself and the AI examines the picture to determine if you’re a woman. If your features don’t align with it’s facial recognition software you are rejected and not allowed to try again. It’s been reported that transwomen and women of color who have tried accessing the app and have been denied. When PinkNews reached out the CEO of Giggle she reiterated that the app is for women only not men. I’m thinking that’s okay because transwomen are women but then in a tweet she published on January 22nd she wrote, “The *only* reason anyone is struggling to answer “what is a woman” is because men are claiming to be women. Thats all. Take that away & “what is a woman” remains as clear as it has always been. Nothing has changed. We’re still just adult human females. Evolution hasn’t tricked us”. Who gave her or any other person the right to define who is and who is not a woman. The transphobia here is disgusting and it starts with the AI facial recognition software and those that created it and then trickles down to this CEO and then to anyone who uses this app and is aware of this mess. The core premise of the app is fine. I believe in sacred spaces that are created to uplift a specific group of people. This on the other hand is not that. It’s being intentionally discriminatory and is unapolegic about it. The app itself has a 1.9 rating in the app store and people have been very vocal about it’s discrimination and dislike for what its doing. So carma is already working in our favor.
Now I have to give you the latest on Amy Schneider. As of yesterday she won her 39th consecutive game and passed Matt Amodio. She is officially in the number 2 spot for the most wins in Jeopardy! history behind Ken Jennings. If you all remember Ken won 74 straight games so she’s got quite a ways to go to pass him. Amy has now won 1.3 million dollars and is doing it with ease. This last game she lost the final jeopardy round and still won by a landslide. Hear what she says has been the best part. [PLAY CLIP] Go Amy! We are rooting for you here at E3 Radio.
In more entertainment news, Scream has hit the theaters and this time with a queer character being played by Jasmin Savoy Brown. You may know Jasmin for her role on the Showtime series Yellowjackets which is a long-running horror franchise. Well with her role in Scream’s fifth installment she made horror history playing its first queer character. Wow. I’m pretty sure I remember when the first one dropped. Jasmin shared this with Logo prior to the film’s release, “What I love about playing Mindy is she’s a queer Black woman, just like myself,”… “So, I’m really proud of that.” From what I’ve read she’s not in every scene but she makes an impression when she is. If you’re into horror you’ve probably already seen it but if not might be worth checking out.
As always we close out our podcast with a word of the day. Today’s word is forgiveness. The word is so easy to say but so challenging to practice. When people have wronged us it’s hard to let that go. There have been times when I just walked away from friendships without even a conversation. There have been times when I held on to that wrong for so long, I forgot what I was mad about and still chose not to speak to that person again. Was it worth it? Is that a healthy way to live? I say all this to say that forgiveness is freedom. Only things you give energy too can percolate in your world. So choose to give your energy to something and someone else. Let that burden go. Release that harm. Forgive & experience the freedom that gives you in your life. Till tomorrow family, peace.
