The famed Disney Channel animated series The Proud Family is back & with Queer characters you’ll love. Samsung releases a Queer affirming ad in Singapore and then pulls it quicker than a blink of an eye. Lil Nas X has been served a cease and desist letter for the Montero pregnancy promo video. 

Our leading story for today is about the upcoming season of the Disney Channel’s Proud Family. The season is called “Louder & Prouder ” and it features some of our fav people; Billy Porter, Lena Waithe, Lil Nas X, EJ Johnson, Lizzo, Keke Palmer & Gabrielle Union. What is really making this season stand out are the new characters its introducing; two of which are gay dads voiced by Billy Porter & Zachary Quinto as well as an old friend of Penny’s Michael Collins who has emerged as a witty gender nonconfirming fashionista voiced by EJ Johnson. Now Billy & Zachary are a mixed raced couple who are parents to their adopted child who is a 14-year old activist May Leibowitz-Jenkins who is played by the one and only Keke Palmer.  During the preview Oscar, ya’ll know Penny’s dad, meets a new character at a bank, Randall Leibovitz-Jenkins, voiced by Billy Porter. This new character tells Oscar “we brothers stick together,” before introducing him to his husband Barry, played by Zachary. Later, at a party, Randall aka Billy Porter encourages Oscar by saying “you should try looking at the world through Penny’s eyes.” Then before we know it we see a scene of Oscar dancing along with Barry and Randall, and the rest of the family. It seems like his new gay besties are going to help open Oscar’s eyes and help him grow a bit. Goodness knows Oscar is always up to something to keep us entertained. I’m also sure Michael’s presence at school is going to give us life & new perspectives about being out at school. The Proud Family is so important as we can count the number of Black centered animated series on television on one hand. Representation still matters & especially in spaces like cartoons because Black & Queer folks deserve seeing their lives reflected on screen. The new season starts February 23rd and based on the previews it will definitely be worth watching even for you adults out there.

Next up, Samsung has pulled an ad playing in Singapore which featured a drag performer and his muslim mother sharing a heartfelt moment of love and acceptance. Now Samsung must have known the anti-LGBTQ sentiments in Singpore before giving the commercial the go ahead for distribution. LGBTQ rights in Singapore are still extremely limited and they still consider same-sex activity between men illegal. Even after a 2020 challenge to the law so you can’t be in the rooms creating, reviewing, & revising this ad without having this conversation. Samsung was clearly on board with the content prior to taking it down from it’s online channels shortly after it was posted. So, what happened? Government pressure? Most likely. Now the official statement says, it “may be perceived as insensitive and offensive to some members of our local community”. I’m thinking, you knew this was a possibility before you approved it to be aired but I’m going to assume they didn’t imagine how bad the pressure would be from those in power to remove it. Well, according to “Wake Up Singapore” , which shared a version of the ad on their TikTok channels reported that the Streisand effect was in full swing. Now I had to google what the Streisand effect was and it is a phenomenon that occurs when an attempt to hide, remove, or censor information has the unintended consequence of increasing awareness of that information, often via the Internet. They are spot on too because since Samsung has taken it down it Wake Up Singapore has reported nearly 300K views of the ad on its social channels. Our last story for today is about Lil Nas X being hit with a cease and desist letter for allegedly ripping off the pregnancy promo idea for Montero. If you were following Lil Nas X during the promo of his album Montero then you absolutely remember the pregnancy video that showed him acting like he was giving birth as it has accumulated 15 million views. The catch was it wasn’t to a human baby but rather his album Montero. Well, Dana Dentata had a very similar scene in her music video and is saying that Lil Nas X stole the entire idea. She’s saying that if they can’t negotiate a fair settlement she will file a copyright infringement lawsuit next. We will see what happens. 

To close out our episode you know we have to end with a word for the day. The word today is taken from a quote in my office that reads, “Life is meant to be lived”. I grew up hearing, “ohh I can’t wait to retire so I can enjoy life”. Why do we have to wait so long? From what I can see aging is a beast so I say leave that saying and the story it’s telling behind. Time waits for no one. The pancake or panorama or whatever you call the COVID-19 vortex we’ve been in for two years has taught us that we have to seize the day. Life is meant to be lived so go and do just that, okay. Till tomorrow family, peace.
