Former Gucci Mane Rapper Lil Wop Says He Likes “Guys & Girls”
Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn here with our queer news from today.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets Democrats fired up at the New York State Democratic Convention. She said, “I will do everything I can to get democrats elected up and down the ticket”. Rapper Lil Wop comes out on Instagram and tells his fans he’s bisexual. We salute Masha P. Johnson during our Black History Month spotlight & I drop a new audio drama podcast recommendation.
Our leading story for today is coming out of the New York State Democratic Convention where former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was speaking and gave it to the Republicans. Take a listen. All of that is facts and we need more politicians daring to tell the truth out loud just like this. 2022 is going to be an important election cycle as Republicans have been going after voting rights, our trans fam, & even LGBTQ books. I have to tap into my Ella Baker often okay because it’s exhausting talking and advocating for basic rights but I’m reminded, we who believe in freedom cannot rest.
Next up is a coming out story and not just any coming story. Lil Wop who is a former Gucci Mane rapper came out on Instgram with a picture and short caption. Now the picture had him in a whte t-shirt rolled up like a crop top showing all his tats with his locs in two pigtails and the caption read “I”m bisexual I like Guys & Girls It’s W.E” with a smile and doubt heart emojis. This post has garnered over 25 thousand likes and 10 thousand comments. Most of the comments are supportive but some said he had to be hacked. Welp Lil Wop posted again and said, “I’m definitely not hacked” with the smiling heart emoji. Now ion Lil Wop at all but what i do know is that a young black man who raps & has tons of tats is not the picture people have of who is bisexual. His world is still very dominated by male chauvinistic homophobes. I went through some of his other posts and folks are commenting all types of homophobic mess. I will say today’s hip hop is not that of 20 years ago but they’ve still got a long way to go just like any other male dominated industry. So I’m sending lots of love out to Lil Wop for having the courage to come out and I hope he continues to find and have success at what he’s doing. He may not know it yet but he’s given someone else who looks like him the courage to do the same.
Now y’all know its Black History Month and in every episode this month we are going to celebrate living at the intersections of being Black & Queer. With that our Black History spotlight today is Marsha P. Johnson.
As reported by NBC news, Marsha P. Johnson — who would tell people the “P” stood for “pay it no mind” — was an outspoken transgender rights activist and was one of the central figures of the historic Stonewall uprising of 1969. Along with fellow trans activist Sylvia Rivera, Johnson helped form Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a political organization that provided housing and other forms of support to homeless queer youth and sex workers in Manhattan. She also performed with the drag performance troupe Hot Peaches from 1972 through the ‘90s and was an AIDS activist with AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP). Many remember Marsha by wearing the flower headdress she dawned in so many pictures. She was fierce and unapologetic. Marsha we see you & we salute you.
It’s Friday which means I’m here with another podcast recommendation for you. As I said last week I am your new self-proclaimed audio drama evangelist. Oh that title tickles me but for real I do really enjoy them. Last week I recommended True Love, Season 1. This week I’m recommending BlackOut. BlackOut will have you binging okay. It stars Academy Award winner Rami Malek in this apocalyptic thriller as a small-town radio DJ, Simon Itani, fights to protect his family and community after the power grid goes down nationwide, upending modern civilization. Upending puts it mildly. It’s a really good audio drama worth digging into over the weekend. I’ve included a link the show notes for easy access.
For your weekend take this word with you. Better days are coming. They are called Saturday & Sunday. Enjoy them. Till Monday family, peace.
