Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn here with our queer news from today.

Republican homophobic politics in Texas & Florida are moving forward & it’s terrifying. For real, terrifying. Brett Netzer went on Twitter and decided to share that he’s racist & homophobic & the Red Sox quickly gave him the boot. It is Women’s Herstory Month so today we salute my ultimate fav Robin Roberts.

Our leading stories for today are coming out of Florida & Texas. First up, is Flordia and the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. We talked about this back at the end of January when it was headed to the house floor. Well now it’s passed the house, the final Senate committee and is headed to the Senate floor for a full vote. The governor of Florida has already said he will sign it without hesitation. So what does all this really mean. Basically this bill bans primary school teachers from discussing LGBTQ identities in the classroom at all and if they do they can actually be sued by a parent. The bill is officially known as the Parental Rights in Education Bill and its simply a bunch of homophobic BS. Dozens of teachers, students, and activists tried to persuade politicians with emotional public testimonials but to no avail. The bill appears to be on its way for signature. I will continue following this story and keep you all updated.

Now for Texas and the disgusting actions of the Attorney General Ken Paxton and Governor Abbott. Last week the Attorney General stated that providing gender-affirming medical care – including puberty blockers and hormone therapy to any person under 18 is considered child abuse under state law. The next day Governor Abbott released a directive calling on all “licensed professionals” and “members of the public” to report parents of transgender minors to state authorities if they know of any young person receiving gender-affirming medical care. Well it’s happening and our trans fam in Texas are terrified. An actual employee of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, who has been put in charge of these investigations, has been put on leave and her family under investigation as she was reported for child abuse as she has a trans teenager. Civil rights groups, the ACLU, Lambda Legal and Houston based law firm Baker Botts are representing this family and in their complaint have said these actions have wreaked havoc on their lives.  Y’all this is scary as hell. Now District attorneys in five of the state’s largest counties also said Thursday that they would not follow Abbott’s directive, writing in a joint statement that they “will enforce the Constitution and will not irrationally and unjustifiably interfere with medical decisions made between children, their parents, and their medical physicians.” I’m glad they stood up but the terror these families are living in right now not knowing if the bigot living next door is going to report them for child abuse is frightening. Even though courts might not uphold Abbott’s directive, advocacy groups say they’ve received a flood of messages from the parents of trans kids who are worried about being reported for child abuse.

In sports news, the Red Sox have released minor leaguer Brett Netzer for being too honest about his racist and homophoic feelings. He went straight Southern racist & homophoic on twitter. One tweet said, “i am a racist. i do sometimes make assumptions based on another persons race/ethnicity/culture. glad that is out of the way.” Another called closeted trans people rapists, stating that, “any person who is secretly transgender, and their partner does not know, and sexual actions have taken place, is a rapist and a sexual molester. may God be the judge.”

Yup he said all this on Twitter for the world to see. The 2017 third-round pick who has not played in a game since before the pandemic began so not a huge loss for the sport at all. I must say there is something refreshing about someone being honest about it. I mean there is something clear about that Southern racism, rite. This Northern systemic approach is exhausting to decipher especially when they smile in your face okay.

Now it is women’s herstory month & I will be sharing some of my favorite women who have made profound impacts on the world around them. The inequities women still face today are awful from the wage gap to attaining leadership positions to #MeToo. The journey has been long since the suffrage movement and there is still such a long way to go. So, telling these stories & learning more about these icons brings me so much joy.

So with that we salute my all time favorite ever, Robin Roberts.

Journalist Robin Roberts grew up in Mississippi and earned a degree in communications from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1983. She went on to become a sports reporter and anchor for a local TV station in Mississippi. At age 29, Roberts began hosting ESPN’s Sportscenter and, not long after, appearing as a guest reporter on Good Morning America. Well in 2005, she was hired as a full-time co-anchor of the morning news program and they’ve been the number one morning show ever since. Under her leadership, the broadcast has won four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Morning Program and the 2017 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team. We all watched her beat cancer and I couldn’t have been happier for her when she came out in 2014. Robin Roberts is the reason I went into broadcasting. I wanted to be just like her. I watched Sportscenter everyday with my dad and she was the only Black woman in sports broadcasting. The more I learned about her the more I loved her. I actually wrote fan letters y’all. True story. I am actively manifesting the opportunity to meet & interview her because that would be a dream come true.

You know we always end the show with a word of the day. Today’s word comes from SelfMadeLadies.com and it says, “What you think. You create. What you feel. You attract. What you imagine. You become.” I say be conscious of your thoughts always. It all starts in your mind. Learn to control it and you will absolutely create the life you want to live. Till tomorrow, family. Peace.
