Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn and if you enjoy what you hear rate & review us inside your fav podcasting app. Now on to our queer news for today.

After 233 years, a Black woman will be sitting on the Supreme Court and her name is Ketanji Brown Jackson. Magic Johnson & his son EJ sit with Variety and talk candidly about EJ coming out and how they got through it. Marvel has been coming through with the queer representation of late. This time they are casting for a transwoman in the upcoming Ironheart series.

How could our leading story today be anything other than Ketanji Brown Jackson getting the votes needed to be the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court. The count was 53-47 with Republican Senators Collins, Romney & Murkowski joining the Democrats with their ‘yes’. Take a listen to Vice President Kamala Harris lead the Senate. Did that give you chills? Because it gives me chills every single time. The first Black woman Vice President sealing the vote for the first Black woman to sit on the supreme court. It’s poetry in action.

Now, yesterday was the vote and she will be sworn in after Justice Stephen Breyer retires this summer. So we will have a great reason to celebrate this summer too! Now get this. Until the summer, she will keep her current position on the US Court of Appeals. How does that work? Does she get security now? How do you just show up to work knowing you’re about to sit on the highest court in the land! Arguably the most well known judge in the country at this point. Everyday people have no idea who the judges are, you know. Former first lady Michelle Obama said that Ketanji has given Black women and girls “a new dream to dream, a new path to forge, and a future we can all be hopeful for.” I think that pretty much sums it up. Wow wow wow. Big congratulations to Ketanji, her family, her friends, her tribe. They all won yesterday.

Earlier this week I talked about The Proud Family reboot Louder & Prouder on Disney+. Go watch and support and all of things for the vast queer representation they are giving. Well one of the characters is voiced by EJ Johnson. Do y’all know EJ? He’s the son of Magic & Cookie Johnson but at the same time a 6’2 fashion icon & socialite. You can never miss him when he walks in a room, feel me. You know we talk about Dwayne & Gabrielle a lot and how beautifully they’ve handled their daughter Zaya coming out as trans. I will say that the Johnson’s really showed the world how to do it first. Recently, Magic sat down with Variety for a joint interview with EJ and talked about the challenges he faced accepting EJ for who he is. Magic said, “When you grow up in team sports, you’re thinking, ‘Is he gonna play sports?…And then when I saw that he liked dolls and to play dress-up … ‘What are you doing?” EJ shared that his parents were the last people he came out to and Magic was rattling off about things that weren’t particularly nice. It wasn’t until EJ left for NYU that it really hit Magic. EJ said he had only been gone for two months when his dad came to NYU, picked him up at his dorm and hugged him so hard it felt like he was squeezing all of the air out of him. That’s when he knew there was nothing but love between them. Magic talks about how EJ changed him. He said, “He was so proud. This dude here is just so proud of who he is… I had to accept who he was and who he wanted to be. He actually helped me get there. Because he was so proud.” Magic goes on to say “We love him. EJ is amazing. So you got to support your child, because there are so many people who try to discriminate against them, so they need you to support them. Because if you don’t support them, who is going to support them? And love them?” As we talked earlier this week about Jerrod Carmichael coming out and the tough time his family is having with it, these stories are important to share. It’s important for queer folks to know that coming out stories can have happy endings. It’s possible.

Now Marvel has been coming through with the queer representation. This time it’s for the upcoming Ironheart series & they will introduce the first trans woman into the Marvel sphere. The casting call describes her as smart & confident. According to POC Culture, the character will have “a mystical bent and unique sense of humor”, and be “unapologetically nerdy about things that excite her…even if they might be terrifying to others”. Marvel is reportedly looking for trans actresses between 18-22 who are Black, Latina or Afro-Latina. Is that you? It’s time to call your agent.

Let’s end the podcast with a word from my mastermind book. It was the affirmation from today and it really blessed me. It says, I choose my focus. I choose faith. I choose peace. I choose love. That first part though, I choose my focus is big for me right now. There are lots of things going on around me everyday so staying focused is crucial especially when there are deadlines to meet. Choosing your focus also means saying “no” to lots of things that you really want to do because it isn’t going to serve your larger goals. So remember this affirmation today. Choose your focus. Choose faith. Choose peace. Choose love. Till Monday family, peace.
