Will Larkins, a nonbinary high schooler in Florida, decided to fight back against the Don’t Say Gay bill by leading a presentation about Stonewall in class. Out Rep. David Cicilline and the LGBTQ Equality Caucus sit with President Biden to talk about pressing political issues facing the LGBTQ community. Chicago journalist, Kate Sosin, takes to Twitter & calls out MSNBC for misgendering them in a recent story.

Our leading story for today is coming out of Florida, surprise. Well today is a story about courage. Will Larkins, a nonbinary high school student decided to fight against the Don’t Say Gay bill in history class. Since they were studying history from the 60s & 70s they thought it would be fitting to present on the Stonewall Uprising. Y’all know what this bill is all about, rite? Well, the legislation is so vague that it pretty much comes down to teachers & students not being allowed to talk about LGBTQ anything. If you have LGBTQ parents you can’t talk about that. It’s a bill about erasure. So for Will to have the courage to stand in front of their class in a red dress, pearls, and a white furish jacket draped across their arms we can absolutely do our part. Now what does that mean? It can look a lot of different ways but I believe in the 3 T’s; time, talent, and treasure. Everyone has at least one of these and you have to find the way you want to serve. Being of service is the ultimate reward for real for real. Will, I thank you for your courage and we’re sending you a lot of love.

In politics there was a historic first. The LGBTQ Equality Caucus which is composed of LGBTQ politicians was invited to meet with a sitting President for the very first time. Rep. David Cicilline out of Rhode Island said, “President Biden has been the most vocal ally to the LGBTQ+ community we have ever had in the White House…We had a productive conversation about the pressing need for the Equality Act and other legislative and administrative actions to protect vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community in the face of the onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks happening in state legislatures across the country.” The Equality Act has to be the main focus of the conversation as we all hoped it would have passed a long long time ago. I mean it just seems so basic to me that we would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the existing federal civil rights legislation. The House got it right but it’s that Senate that’s always the issue.

For our last story of today I want to amplify a Chicago journalist, Kate Sosin, who used to write for the Windy City Times. For those of you that don’t know, Windy City Times is the long standing LGBTQ newspaper here in Chicago serving the LGBTQ community since 1985. Kate now writes for the 19th and was recently featured on a story by MSNBC. The story is titled, “Female Journalists Face Gender-Based Online Harassment.” Kate who identifies as trans and uses they/them pronouns unfortunately knows more about this topic than they would like to know. Kate & Taylor Lorenz sat with MSNBC for two hours to talk about what’s been happening and how harmful it’s all been. Well the final piece didn’t do their interview justice and they misgendered Kate and focused on Taylor crying vs. the substance of the topic. Kate & the 19th have asked MSNBC to fix the story but it’s been 6 days and the story is still running without any edits. This means Kate continues to be misgendered over and over again. Kate has been so open about their identity so the fact MSNBC would even title the story “Female Journalists” is baffling and why the reporter would say it as well is just dense. You invited Kate to the interview for their perspective so it’s silly they got this wrong. Kate took to twitter and has raised the awareness so hopefully the public pressure will push MSNBC to correct it.

Now let’s end the podcast with a word from Billie Holiday as today would have been her 107th birthday. She said, “You can’t copy anybody and end with anything. If you copy, it means you’re working without any real feeling. No two people on earth are alike, and it’s got to be that way in music or it isn’t music.” I love this. You are one of a kind so do one of a kind things. Feel me. Till tomorrow family, peace.
