The notorious Ed Burk known as Dr. Kevorkian to the LA homeless community was finally sentenced for killing two Black gay men. He got 30 years behind bars. The Kentucky legislature decided to override the governor’s veto and pass an anti-trans sports bill. Anna recommends Jasmyne Cannick’s new podcast which focuses on the murder of Black LGBTQ folks in Jaimica.

Our leading story is out of Los Angeles where yesterday Ed Burk was sentenced to 30 years for killing two Black gay men, Gemmel Moore & Timothy Dean, after dosing them with methamphetamines for his own sexual pleasure. In addition, he was charged with running a drug den and aluring travel for prostitution. For years Ed Burk skated prosecution because of his sizeable donations to the Democratic party but Black queer advocates in LA weren’t having it. Most notably, Jasmyne Cannick, for whom I’ve followed for years is an award-winning freelance journalist and political strategist. She spent four years investigating Ed Buck and humanizing his victims and her reporting became linked with the progression of the case.  Beyond her journalism, she founded Justice for Gemmel and All of Ed Buck’s victims to help advocate for his arrest and conviction. She had this to say, “Where former Los Angeles district attorney Jackie Lacey didn’t even see a case worth prosecuting, federal prosecutors presented an excellent case with the help of the LA County Sheriff’s Department. The evidence and the first-person accounts of #EdBuck’s surviving victims were powerful.  The jury saw Buck’s victims and heard their pain and convicted Ed Buck on ALL nine counts.  I am happy the court upheld the jury’s verdict.  It was the right thing to do…The lives of Black homeless men matter.  The lives of Black queer people matter. The lives of people addicted to drugs matter. The lives of survival sex workers matter. They matter.” What Jasmyne said, okay.

So earlier in the week I reported on Kentucky’s governor vetoing the trans sports bill that came to his desk. Well it didn’t take long for the Kentucky state legislature to override the governor’s veto and pass the bill anyway. Ain’t that some mess. And get this. It is only affecting one athlete out of the state who in fact started her school’s field hockey team and recruited all of the other team members. Now she can no longer compete for her eighth grade year. These folks are so ignorant and that is leading them to create really evil legislation. Now parents are required to show birth certificates for their girls to participate in school sports. And mind you none of these trans sports bills are written for transmen, just transwomen. Please don’t get me started on the misogyny in all of that.

It’s Friday, and time for me to get back to my podcast recommendations. This week I want to recommend you check out the latest from Jasmyne Cannick titled Ring the Alarm: A Special Series on the Murders of LGBTQ People in Jamaica. In this series she takes us to Jamaica where she speaks directly with lesbian, gay, and trans men and women about living in one of the most homophobic countries in the world. Nowhere else will we hear exclusive interviews from inside a secret safe house that helps to hide queer Jamaicans. We will listen as Jasmyne follows lesbian, gay, and trans men and women on their journey using a modern-day underground railroad to seek asylum. In this special series, Jasmyne continues to provide much-needed context while calling attention to the plight of Black people here and abroad. She’s dropped two episodes so far and I can’t wait to hear more. I’ve included a link in the show notes so you can check it out too.

Now let’s close out the week with a word from Dolly Parton. I love me some Dolly and you can catch me and my wife doing Jolene at your local karaoke. I digress. Dolly says, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” And while we put with the rain learn how to dance in it because it won’t last always. Till Monday family, peace.
