Everyone counted Sha’Carri out but she decided to show out. As a Black queer woman who’s gone through everything she has you just don’t know what the person is going to do in these monumental moments. Well she showed us what she can do. She showed out winning the 100m final with a PR of 10.65 seconds. She also won bronze in the 200m and another goal in the 4x100m. I hope y’all were celebrating with her because I sure was.

More on the Summer Interview Series

The Queer News team is changing it up for the next couple of months so we have a little more time to enjoy the summer, our families, and rest. We hope you enjoy these conversations with some really wonderful queer folks doing good in the world. Those are the stories we want to amplify here on Queer News.

During the interview series we won’t leave queer news stories on the sidelines either. Anna will provide brief commentary about the top one or two queer news stories happening that we should be following. Not full stories but know we are still closely following the queer news feeds. You can always follow Anna on social media to stay up to date.

Family, it’s your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn and this is Queer News. Now I typically have a few top queer news stories for you but my wife threw me the most beautiful 40th birthday party on Saturday. I mean I knew something was up but I had no idea it was a big party. Some of my pod friends came in from out of town to celebrate with me too. I am still so full from the experience. Well this celebration meant that the time I usually spend working on the pod was gone but I didn’t want to miss an episode drop. I just can’t do it. Y’all have continued to show up and listen to this pod and support my work which means I can show up too. So just a a few quick things.

Two weeks ago I told you all about my 40 at 40 campaign to celebrate my upcoming 40th birthday. That’s right, I’m turning 40 in two days and it’s a big milestone. It’s a moment. To celebrate this moment I’ve set a goal to bring on 40 new monthly subscribers to the pod. This past week I welcomed 14 new members to the QCrew. Can you believe that? In a week! Let’s welcome Jasmine, Kathy, Amber, Randy, Lona, Paula, Shelly, Crystal, Johndalyn, Carolina, Michael, Tracy, Gaylon, & Sy.. Thank you all! In 14 days I’ve gained 29 new QCrew subscribers to the podcast which means we are at 73% of the goal. Only 11 more subscribers to go. Will you help me reach this goal?

The recurring monthly support of the The QCrew helps to support the Queer News podcast by supplementing the costs; podcast hosting, editing, marketing, travel, etc. If you believe in the work we do. If you believe LGBTQ stories need to be amplified. If you love and respect how I report on the news and tell our stories help me not only reach this goal but exceed it. I mean I only turn 40 once. A link to join the QCrew is in the show notes.

Family, we are still on tour! Do you live in Minneapolis? Meet us outside! Our activation is taking place September 9th in collab with Matriarch Digital Media. Get your ticket today. The Qube’s immersive listening experience has been making its way across the country and the people have really been loving it. This past week we were in Denver and held two activations. They were amazing. One was at Podcast Movement and the other was in collab with the BIPOC Podcast Creators. That one was sold out! We listen to the Qube’s podcast trailers and then talk about our experiences with that topic. It’s been such an enriching experience. Get your ticket today. You already know a link is in the show notes.

The one news story I had to highlight was Sha’Carri Richardson winning at the World Championships. Everyone counted her out but she decided to show out.

For today’s episode I want to share an episode I dropped on October 3, 2022 called Change the Pattern: The AIDS Quilt Travels the South with Purpose. I’ve gained so many new followers to the pod this year that I’d guess many of you haven’t heard this one and it’s pretty special. Change the Pattern is an initiative brought to us by the Southern AIDS Coalition, the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and Gilead Sciences in the fight to end HIV and AIDS in the South. In 2023, the National AIDS Memorial brought sections of the quilt to communities throughout the Southern U.S. to honor Black and Brown lives lost to HIV and AIDS. Well, I had the honor of attending the kick off in Jackson, Mississippi. It was such an amazing experience.

Now you may be asking why Mississippi. Why the South? So a couple little known facts. The South comprises 38% of the U.S. population but it represents over half, yes over half at 52% of all new HIV diagnoses. Let me drop another stat on you. Out of the 17 states defined as being in the South by the U.S. Census; 13 of them have HIV-Specific Criminal Laws or Statutes on the books & 11 of them have actually prosecuted people for living with HIV. HIV Criminalization is still real. I’m sharing these stats because you need to know. I didn’t know and we must change the pattern. So I hope you enjoy this replay episode and I’ll talk to you next week. Peace.
