NCLR is taking the fight to Florida & challenging the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation that was recently signed. Lil Nas X shows out on the Grammy stage & South Carolina wins the NCAA Women’s National Championship in epic fashion.

NCLR has filed a lawsuit challenging the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. You all know we’ve been following this legislation as it’s moved through the Florida legislature. I was so happy to see NCLR would be representing  a dozen students, parents, and teachers, in addition to Equality Florida, which has over 400,000 members, and Family Equality, the nation’s leading group for LGBTQ-parent families and their children.

Roberta Kaplan, founding partner of Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP said, “With the passage of HB 1557, Florida has not only taken a giant step backwards, but it has done so at the expense of our children, the most vulnerable members of society. It is hard to imagine anything more offensive to our constitutional system than treating one group of school kids as second class based solely on who they are or who their parents are. This law cannot be allowed to stand.”

In the press release it says, “The harmful effects of HB 1557 are already apparent in public schools across Florida. Due to the law’s vague   and threats of litigation, teachers and school administrators have said they will remove LGBTQ references from the curriculum and no longer foster or participate in discussions that touch upon LGBTQ issues. LGBTQ students and parents are unsure about whether they can express or discuss their identities, and they worry about detention or other discipline or exclusion that may result if they do. The subordination and erasure of LGBTQ life that HB 1557 seeks to achieve has already begun—and has already imposed concrete harms on countless children and families in Florida, including many of the plaintiffs in this case.”

Family, this Florida legislation is so incredibly harmful and unconstitutional. If all are created equal then we ought to see that we live into that, right? That is the just thing to do, isn’t it? We will continue to follow this story and keep you all up to date on what happens next. I’ve included a link to the press release and blog post by NCLR in case you’d like to read more about this.

Now in entertainment news, the Grammys took place last night in Vegas after a two month delay due to COVID precautions. Trevor Noah hosted and Silk Sonic opened up the show. The duo of Bruno Mars & Anderson Paak took home 4 Grammys in a clean sweep with record & song of the year as well as R&B performance & R&B song of the year. And it’s totally deserved as we all have been singing “Leave the door open” all year long. I also want to show love to Jazmine Sullivan for taking home two trophies for best R&B album & tying with Silk Sonic for R&B performance of the year with “Pick up Your Feelings”.  She deserves, okay. That track was definitely hitting all year. Big ups to Dojo Cat & SZA too for winning for “Kiss Me More” especially when DoJo almost missed it because she went potty. These shows be long, okay. Olivia Rodrigo took a trophy as well as CeCe Winans who won 3 Grammys for “Believe For It”. Now Jon Batiste was the big big winner of the night taking home 5 Grammys one of which was for album of the year.

Now for other moments that made the night stand out. President Zelensky of Ukraine recorded a beautiful message about music filling the quiet moments of war and how Ukrainian musicians are wearing body armor right now instead of tuxedos but he said, “our music will break through anyway”. His anti-war message was followed by John Legend’s powerful performance of “Free” alongside two Ukrainian musicians. H.E.R. performing with Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Lenny Kravitz & Travis Barker was lit. Nas was the OG of the night doing his thing and raping his hits in all white. And Lil Nas X showed out with a medley performance where he turned it out per usual. He look fabulous on the red carpet too. I’m such a fan and if didn’t know now you know.

And y’all know I couldn’t end this show today without talking about the NCAA women’s National Championship game between South Carolina & UConn. Dawn Staley vs. Geno Auriemma.

Paige Bueckers vs. Aliyah Boston. With all that said it was the Destanni Henderson show. She came up big for South Carolina with 26 points and 4 assists and led her team to a 64-49 win over UConn. The Gamecocks are the first team to beat UConn in a national championship game under Auriemma. They were 11-0 and now they are 11-1. This year’s tournament was filled with great competition and they played in front of packed crowds. I feel like women’s basketball is coming into a whole new era and it’s incredibly exciting to watch.

Now let’s end the podcast with a word from fashion blogger Brenna Anastaia. She says Stop waiting for Friday, for summer, for someone to fall in love with you, for life to begin. Happiness is achieved when you stop waiting for it, make the most of the moment you are in now. Yes, it is Monday and all good week’s start with a Monday. Till tomorrow, peace.
