Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn here and if you enjoy what you hear rate & review us inside your fav podcasting app. Now on to our queer news for today.
Jerrod Carmichael comes out in his HBO special Rothaniel and it’s moving to say the very least, New York City Mayor Eric Adams launches an ad campaign targeting Florida residents in response to the Don’t Say Gay legistration and says come to a city where you can say and be whoever you want. The new queer characters in The Proud Family reboot are unapologetic and some parents are not happy about it.
Our leading story for today is about Jerrod Carmichael. He just dropped his latest comedy special Rothaniel on HBO and it is brillant. You may know Jerrod from his comedy specials or the show he had on NBC called the Carmichael show. If you didn’t watch it you missed out because it was really funny and really well done. I mean anytime Loretta Devine & David Alan Grier are your parents it’s a hit, okay. Well his new HBO special is intimate and vulnerable and funny and def worth watching. So he comes out and you can tell it is still really fresh. He talks about getting a text from his brother just a few hours before the taping saying he wasn’t going to make it. He has gone from talking to his mom everyday to not have talked to her in months. She told him I can’t go against Jesus. Whew. What I found endearing was the audience participation in his process. You’ve got to see it for yourself and he recently hosted SNL as part of his promo tour. He was so funny. Take a listen to this. Yea so you got to watch the full bit to get the heal the nation part but its so funny. I enjoy his style and delivery. He’s just really good. I’ve got links to the SNL standup in the show notes and I totally recommend watching Rothaniel on HBO. You won’t be disappointed at all.
It’s funny when Jerrod was joking about coming out in New York. Well New York City Mayor Eric Adams is rolling out a big ad campaign to push LGBTQ folks to move to the big apple. He says, “Come to a city where you can say and be whoever you want”. He said this in a speech where he called the Florida “Don’t Say Gay” legislation “state-sponsored discrimination”. This ad campaign is targeting five cities, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and West Palm Beach and is expected to pull 5 million views. The campaign is clever, the graphics are vibrant and it is undoubtedly timely. Many folks in Florida are thinking about what it means to live there as LGBTQ parents or parents with LGBTQ children. With all that said, I reported back in February about Mayor Adams creating a whole new Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnership for a well known homophobic pastor Fernando Cabrera. Could this be his way of winning some love back from LGBTQ folks? Maybe and it might just work.
Now more in entertainment news, The Proud Family is back & with Queer characters you’ll love. I reported about this back in January when the news dropped and now that the show is live some parents are definitely not happy. Gaye Magazine reported about a mom who posted about how much she disliked it. In her post she shared that the “Proud family louder and prouder is a cartoon that promotes homosexuality” and “I hate Babylon if you have children and don’t want them to be influenced by this foolishness I strongly suggest not allowing them to watch Disney+ unsupervised”. Whew! And I will say that cartoons ought to mirror life just as much as anything and anyone else. Stop trying to erase us from society. We’ve been here and we aren’t going anywhere.
The season is called “Louder & Prouder ” and it features some of our fav people; Billy Porter, Lena Waithe, Lil Nas X, EJ Johnson, Lizzo, Keke Palmer & Gabrielle Union. What is really making this season stand out are the new characters its introducing; two of which are gay dads voiced by Billy Porter & Zachary Quinto as well as an old friend of Penny’s Michael Collins who has emerged as a witty gender nonconfirming fashionista voiced by EJ Johnson. This season is star-studded to say the very least. Lena Waithe just posted her episode on IG. Take a listen.
So when shows like the Proud Family happen we should turn it on even if we aren’t watching. We should tell others to watch. Support for shows like this look like ratings. So if you’ve got Disney+ take some time and support.
Now let’s end the podcast with a word. You know Anna’s always got a word. The word today is that you can only do one thing at a time. That’s it. Believe me I am speaking to myself today, okay. My to-do list is mighty long and all of its important in its own right but at the same time I can only do one thing at a time. I have to focus, prioritize, and execute well. I need to lean into the team around me and seek help where I need it. So I say the same thing to you. Focus, prioritize, and execute well. Lean in when you need too. It’s all going to work out for the good. Till tomorrow family, peace.
