Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn with our queer news for today. If you enjoy what you hear rate & review us inside your fav podcasting app, okay. Also, last Wednesday I dropped an update on Brittney Griner. We have new information on how she’s been doing and how the WNBA plan to keep her top of mind throughout the season. I think it’s good & I’d love for you to take a listen and tell me what you think. If you do enjoy it and find it informative, share it with a friend. Now for the news.

Ina Fried of Axios started a movement on Twitter called #Letters4TransKids and its shining light & hope where Republicans have been serving darkness & hate. Jorge Diaz-Johnston a Florida LGBTQ advocate was murdered back in January and they found out it was his roommate who killed him. Pabllo Vittar, a Brazilian drag queen, made history as the first drag performer to grace the stage at Coachella.

Our leading story for today is centering joy with the goal of reclaiming a narrative. #Letters4TransKids is a movement on Twitter where trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming Twitter users are sharing their stories of growing up trans, the challenges they faced, how they overcame and/or overcoming them, and how their lives are now. This movement was started by Ina Fried, the chief technology correspondent for Axios. She wrote, “It’s been a rough time for trans and nonbinary youth. I wanted to find a way to show them support and #letters4transkids was what I came up with. I hope you will join me by posting a message of encouragement to these amazing young people and tagging it #letters4transkids” Well her 93,000 followers took that call to action and made it happen. I spent some time and read a few. These letters are beautiful and honest and everything Ina had in mind. In a world that is condemning and attacking trans youth right now this is the perfect response that will reach those who need it most. If all of the political nonsense is weighing on you and you feel like your cup is on “e” just search the hashtag and you’ll get filled back up. Promise. Thanks Ina.

Now back in January I reported on the  murder of Jorge Diaz-Johnston, an LGBTQ+ activist who won a landmark court case in Miami-Dade County against the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. He had gone missing and was found dead in a landfill. Jorge & his husband were one of six couples who successfully challenged Florida’s ban when they were denied marriage licenses in 2014. He is part of the reason Floridians won marriage equality which is really significant. Well just yesterday the news broke that Jorge’s roommate Steven Yinger is facing charges of first-degree murder, tampering with evidence and grand theft. I know I know, you’re like Anna you just said he was married & now he has a roommate. Yes I said the same thing. Turns out him and his husband were separated and living apart at the time. He said, “I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that my life has been completely altered, and this turned everything upside down and ended all of our hopes and plans…To now be a part of this and have our marriage end this way is something I just never saw coming and still frankly can’t accept.” Whew I cannot imagine what he’s going through. Let me tell y’all something. Stop thinking you have till tomorrow. You have today. Let whatever it is go and go get what you want.

Our last story for today is about a history making performance. Pabllo Vittar, a Brazilian drag queen became the first queen to ever perform at Coachella. Now she was supposed to perform back in 2020 but had to wait for the pancake to cool down. I saw a few clips and it looks like she worked it and was overcome by all the support. There is a clip where she is on her back and just overcome with emotion while the crowd is screaming in support. She left it all on the floor. One of the attendees tweeted, “It remains a mystery to me why @pablovittar isn’t a renowned international pop star. That #Coachella performance was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Brazilian pop queens are built different. The basic girlies should be scared.” Well all the queens I know ain’t never scared okay but Pabllo has made a new way for other queens to follow. To be the first is great and the goal should always be that you aren’t the last.

Let’s close out the podcast with a word about leaning in. My plate is often full with my list of to dos, meetings, recording TikToks, cooking dinner, taking care of my pup, my mom, my wife child the list can go on and on. I can’t do this life alone and neither can you. When you need help, ask for it. Lean in to those who love you and support you and want to help. Life isn’t meant for us to do it alone so lean in. Trust and let go. I’m practicing this right now as I talk to you and you can do it too. Till tomorrow family, peace
